Metallica, being know for making experiments, created something unusual with their 9th album. S&M was recorded during two concerts in Berkeley together with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. That's why they did not limit themselves to their slower pieces, but also worked in rougher numbers such as "Hero Of The Day" or "Master Of Puppets". The name S&M is a play on words for the abbreviation of sadomasochism. In the context of the album, these letters stand for symphony and Metallica. This is reflected by the cover, displaying the S as a mirrored violin clef and the M from the band logo.
